GES Curriculum


We offer students a broad curriculum based on the English and Welsh National Curriculum. We employ well qualified western teachers who are experienced in delivering this curriculum and who have the necessary skills to teach and inspire children who, for the most part, have English as a second language.  

The Gulf English School students are friendly and well behaved. Currently 85% of students  are Qatari but there are increasing numbers of international students joining the school from many different countries. We offer an extensive After School Programme when students can enjoy their favorite sports and pastimes.  

We track the performance of our students carefully as we are keen to see them make the necessary progress that they will require in order to enter the Secondary School.

We are aware that the large majority of our children have English as an additional language (EAL) and our teaching staff is empathetic to their needs in using a variety of teaching strategies in the classroom. Student support is available from expert EAL and SEN specialists for those children who may need support and the school is keen to support and extend the gifted and talented . The school has a qualified counselor for any child in need of additional emotional support.

There is a great emphasis placed on Numeracy and Literacy in the school and other subjects such as Geography and History are incorporated into an Integrated Curriculum in which is a thematic based approach to learning. The school works hard to develop the children’s Independent Learning abilities by encouraging research skills.

In Early years we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum which incorporates all six areas of learning.  Our  balanced curriculum ensures that learners move to Key Stage 1 as well balanced, motivated learners with a sound skills base.

In Key Stage 1 we focus on establishing sound phonic skills, speaking and listening and  reading.  In Mathematics pupils are led to be firmly grounded in the basic application of number, calculation and problem solving. This is all delivered through a well planned, integrated  curriculum, which includes PE, Music and Art so that we are helping to develop the whole child.

In Key Stage 2 we continue to work with developing the child’s linguistic and numeracy skills and we follow an adapted version of the English and Welsh Curriculum. The children’s progress is monitored though our tracking system and we aim to develop the child’s thinking skills. There is a great emphasis placed on Numeracy and Literacy in the Primary school and other subjects such as Geography and History are incorporated into an Integrated Curriculum in which is a thematic based approach to learning. Throughout Key Stage 3, students follow a modified version of the National Curriculum for England. This is a direct continuation of studies carried out in Key Stage 2. This programme includes Art & Design, English, French, Geography, History, ICT, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, PSHE and Science. These subjects are supplemented by Arabic and Islamic lessons. Students work is continually assessed and tracked throughout Key Stage 3. At the end of Key Stage 3 students will be independent learners who are well prepared for their IGCSE courses.

In years 10 and 11 students study for international qualifications in the IGCSE examinations. The core subjects that all students study are English, Mathematics, ICT and Co-ordinated Science. Most students also take the Arabic IGCSE. In addition, students choose three option subjects from :
Art, Business, Economics, Media Studies, French, Spanish, Geography, History, Music, Physical Education.

In years 12 students have the option of taking AS-level or  IB diploma.

AS-level  is an internationally recognized qualification at post 16. In AS we offer a range of subjects including English, Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Business Studies and Geography this course primarily gives our students the opportunity to prepare for both local Universities and studying abroad in a wide range of countries.

IB  students have the opportunity to study in year 12 and 13  the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme which is the gold standard of post 16 education. The IB Diploma is very well respected by universities around the world and most of our IB graduates were accepted at high standard universities and colleges. The IB Diploma gives students a broad education around a core (Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS) in six academic subjects : two Languages, Mathematics, one or two Humanities subject, one or two Sciences and Arts.
